Box Office: Filipinos get "Gangstered"

Kathniel shows no signs of slowing down. She's Dating The Gangster ruled the box office this week, rare for a season when Hollywood movies dominate.

Gangster opened to ₱ 114.75 million. That's a strong opening for a local movie in July when top Hollywood movies came out. This also ranks third for Star Cinema's movies this year (behind Bride for Rent & Starting Over Again).

The strong opening has a lot of causes. The book has already generated a fanbase since it was on Wattpad (same as Diary ng Panget). The Kathniel loveteam continues to be strong. And more importantly, the competition has become weaker (Apes wasn't that big; Transformers crashed after a huge opening).

Reviews for the movie has been good which can help it to hold. Competition for the next few weeks aren't that strong for Gangster (Guardians of the Galaxy may be the toughest of them). But, we should not forget how movies in the last few months crashed after their opening and local movies tend to decrease atleast 60 percent on its second week.

Overall, She's Dating The Gangster should play very well in the next few weeks. With good reviews and weaker competiton, it should at least gross 230 million by the end of its run.

In second place, Dawn of the Planet of the Apes eased 43 percent to
₱ 31.83 million. That's a really strong hold for a top movie this year. In two weeks, the sequel has now grossed ₱  98.3 million.

Other Grosses:
Step Up: Revolution - ₱ 23.61 million
Transformers: Age of Extinction - ₱ 10.18 million; New Total - ₱ 428.5 million
Begin Again - ₱ 2.49 million; New Total - ₱ 10.17 million

Box Offce: "Transformers" fall, "Evil" rises

Transformers: Age of Extinction
Transformers: Age of Extinction  held up into top spot. Meanwhile, Deliver Us From Evil opened strong.

In its second week, Transformers 4 fell 63 percent to ₱ 91.47 million. That's a bit worse last Transformers 3's 52 percent drop. So far, the movie has already grossed ₱ 372 million which is still 31 million higher than the previous installment. If Transformers follows the trend (big opening; huge second week fall) , the movie might end up below the third one.

This gross makes a good opening for next week's Dawn of the Planet of the Apes and She's Dating The Gangster on July 16.

In second place, Deliver Us From Evil opened to ₱ 23.4 million. That's a good opening for a horror movie. In fact, that's just a little below with 2013's The Conjuring and Insidious 2.If it can have a strong word of mouth, the horror movie can gross up to ₱ 40 million.

Other Grosses:
22 Jump Street - ₱ 5.52 million; New Total - ₱ 55.17 million
How to Train Your Dragon 2 - ₱ 3.86 million; New Total - ₱ 140.15 million
