Box Office: "Guardians" takes the box office "galaxy"

A new Marvel franchise has arrived and Filipinos warmly welcomed it. Guardians of the Galaxy opened to huge numbers. Meanwhile, Trophy Wife started soft.

Guardians of the Galaxy opened to a huge ₱ 103 million. That's a high opening for original Marvel movie. Competition seems to be slow this month. That gives Guardians  a chance to hold in the next few weeks. A gross north of 230 million is likely.

She's Dating The Gangster continues its strong run. In its third week, it was off 67 percent to ₱ 22.44 million. So far, the romantic comedy movie has now earned a fantastic ₱ 250 million.

In third place, Trophy Wife  opened to ₱ 20.05 million. That's an okay debut for non-Star Cinema movie. This is also an okay debut for a adult drama genre that is falling (3 Star Cinema movies and 1 VIVA movie are only the sucessful ones).  With the regular second week drop, Trophy Wife should at least gross 50 million.

Box Office: Filipinos get "Gangstered"

Memorable scenes in the movie "She's Dating The Gangster" 12 940x462
Daniel Padilla in She's Dating The Gangster
Kathniel shows no signs of slowing down. She's Dating The Gangster ruled the box office this week, rare for a season when Hollywood movies dominate.

Gangster opened to ₱ 114.75 million. That's a strong opening for a local movie in July when top Hollywood movies came out. This also ranks third for Star Cinema's movies this year (behind Bride for Rent & Starting Over Again).

The strong opening has a lot of causes. The book has already generated a fanbase since it was on Wattpad (same as Diary ng Panget). The Kathniel loveteam continues to be strong. And more importantly, the competition has become weaker (Apes wasn't that big; Transformers crashed after a huge opening).

Reviews for the movie has been good which can help it to hold. Competition for the next few weeks aren't that strong for Gangster (Guardians of the Galaxy may be the toughest of them). But, we should not forget how movies in the last few months crashed after their opening and local movies tend to decrease atleast 60 percent on its second week.

Overall, She's Dating The Gangster should play very well in the next few weeks. With good reviews and weaker competiton, it should at least gross 230 million by the end of its run.

In second place, Dawn of the Planet of the Apes eased 43 percent to
₱ 31.83 million. That's a really strong hold for a top movie this year. In two weeks, the sequel has now grossed ₱  98.3 million.

Other Grosses:
Step Up: Revolution - ₱ 23.61 million
Transformers: Age of Extinction - ₱ 10.18 million; New Total - ₱ 428.5 million
Begin Again - ₱ 2.49 million; New Total - ₱ 10.17 million

Box Offce: "Transformers" fall, "Evil" rises

Transformers: Age of Extinction
Transformers: Age of Extinction  held up into top spot. Meanwhile, Deliver Us From Evil opened strong.

In its second week, Transformers 4 fell 63 percent to ₱ 91.47 million. That's a bit worse last Transformers 3's 52 percent drop. So far, the movie has already grossed ₱ 372 million which is still 31 million higher than the previous installment. If Transformers follows the trend (big opening; huge second week fall) , the movie might end up below the third one.

This gross makes a good opening for next week's Dawn of the Planet of the Apes and She's Dating The Gangster on July 16.

In second place, Deliver Us From Evil opened to ₱ 23.4 million. That's a good opening for a horror movie. In fact, that's just a little below with 2013's The Conjuring and Insidious 2.If it can have a strong word of mouth, the horror movie can gross up to ₱ 40 million.

Other Grosses:
22 Jump Street - ₱ 5.52 million; New Total - ₱ 55.17 million
How to Train Your Dragon 2 - ₱ 3.86 million; New Total - ₱ 140.15 million

Box Office: "Dragons" off to a flaming start

How To Train Your Dragon 2
How To Train Your Dragon 2 rises into top though its domination in the country is very limited.

Dragon 2 opened to ₱ 84.88 million .That's the second highest opening for an animated movie in the country and is way above the first one (₱8.2 million). But, with Transformers: Age of Extinction opening next week, it will crash in the next few weeks.

Thanks to a strong word of mouth, The Fault in Our Stars managed to keep in second place grossing ₱ 38.4 million (just off 26 percent). So far, the Young Adult cancer drama has now earned ₱ 106 million.

After reigning for two weeks, Maleficient fell to third place this week earning ₱ 27.24 million and has already banked a strong ₱ 342 million in three weeks.

Biblical epic Noah opened in fourth place with a decent ₱ 21.84 million. That's gross should became hgiher if it was release on the time of the Holy Week.

Edge of Tomorrow fell to fifth place with ₱ 17.1 million and has earned a total of ₱ 69.6 million in two weeks. Blended, another movie for Warner Bros., opened in sixth place with ₱ 9.32 million.

Maybe This Time took another huge fall. It was of 79 percent to ₱ 5.89 million. In three weeks, the movie has now earned a strong ₱ 134 million.

Other grosses:
7500 - ₱ 2.159 million
X-Men: Days of Future Past - ₱ 2.151 million; New Total - ₱ 306.66 millionThere are still no reports for My Illegal Wife's gross.

Box Office (UPDATED) : Filipinos are in "The Fault" mania too but "Maleficient" still leads

The Fault in Our Stars
All of the stars are in to The Fault in our Stars but not so many to beat Maleficient.

Maleficient was of 50 percent to ₱ 82.66 million in its second week. So far, the Angelina Jolie starring movie has earned ₱ 300 million.

The Fault starring Shailene Woodley and Ansel Elgort opened to 51.46 million making it one of the highest opening for a foreign romantic drama movie.

The opening was due to many good factors: The source novel has dominated the bookstores making a large fanbase among teenagers and adults (est. 283,680 admissions). Second, According to ClickTheCity, cinemas have noted repeat in views that reaches up to fourth recurrence. Third, Shailene Woodley is getting popular among the teens (thanks to Divergent)which might have helped too. And lastly, The strong word-of-mouth really helps a movie to continue a strong gross.

The market has been overcrowded lately and with the opening of Transformers: Age of Extinction in two weeks, it's hard to predict its final gross. For now, its likely to reach 100 million before the end of its run.

Edge of Tomorrow opened in third place with ₱ 41.04 million. That's a bit higher than Tom Cruise previous movie, Oblivion (₱ 36 million). With a decent opening, Edge of Tomorrow is likely to end it run to ₱ 75 million.

Maybe This Time fell on fourth place this week earning ₱ 28.05 (off a normal 60 percent from last week). In two weeks, the Sarah Geronimo movie has now grossed ₱ 117 million.

In fifth place, X-Men: Days of Future Past continues to crash. It was off 71 percent to ₱ 17.30 million but it has now earned a strong ₱ 299 million.

Other Grosses:
Pee Mak Prakanong - ₱ 1.38 million
Godzilla - ₱ 0.80 million; New Total; ₱ 155.1 million

Box Office: "Maleficient" beats "Maybe This Time"

Maleficient
UPDATED:

Box Office continues to surprise us as Maleficient opened to huge numbers. Meanwhile. Maybe This Time also did fine but not extraordinary.

Maleficient opened to a ₱ 179.8 million. That's higher than Prince of Persia: Sands of Time (156-M), Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End (155-M) and Alice in Wonderland (140-M) making it the highest non-Marvel opening for Disney.

It's a very surprising opening for Maleficient. This is likely due to the lack of family-friendly movies (Spiderman 2 crashed on its second week and Rio 2 closed weeks ago). Even if How To Train Your Dragon surprises too, ₱ 280 million is now locked for Maleficient.

Want to see Maleficient's gross per location? See here

Maybe This Time
Maybe This Time opened to ₱ 72.96 million. That's the highest opening week for a movie starring Sarah Geronimo (not including It Takes A Man and A Woman). Recently, movies both domestic and foreign fell on their second week (by 60%) and Maybe This Time is likely to follow that pattern. Still, it is likely to finish between
₱ 140-150 million.

X-Men: Days of Future Past fell 65 percent this week to ₱ 60.27 million. With ₱ 273 million in 2 weeks, it is now the highest grossing X-Men movie in the country.

While X-Men is losing power, Godzilla crashed harder. The monster movie crashed 81 percent to ₱ 5.59 million. In three weeks, it has now grossed ₱ 154 million.

The Quiet Ones opened to ₱ 1.98 million and appears to fade quickly from the theaters. Thanks to the overcrowded market today.

Other Grosses:

The Amazing Spiderman 2 - ₱ 0.59 million; New Total: ₱ 446.20 million

"Maybe This Time" dominates Wednesday

A Scene in Maybe This Time
Sarah Geronimo and Coco Martin proved that local industry can fight with Hollywood movies but it didn't reached higher milestone.

Maybe This Time opened to 20 million according to Star Cinema. That's a bit below recent Star Cinema movies: Bride for Rent (21 million) and Starting Over Again (25 million) and previous Sarah Geronimo movie (It Takes a Man and A Woman opened to a whopping 39 million).

But for a new team-up and heavy competitions, that's a very good number. The movie is higher than the first John Lloyd-Sarah movie (9 million) and Gerald-Sarah movie (15 million) which makes it the highest opening for a new team-up with Sarah Geronimo.

For the week, Maybe This Time could gross around ₱ 65-75 million although higher than that is still possible

Box Office: Past and Present "X-Mens" rules the country

X-Men: Days of Future Past (Source: IMDB)

This week, X-Men: Days of Future Past dominated the box office. Meanwhile, grosses for other movies are not yet available.

The sequel to the 2011 prequel earned an estimated ₱ 170 million ($3.9 million according to estimates). That's the highest opening gross from a X-Men movie. It is way up from the recent X-Men movies: Wolverine, First Class, The Wolverine (₱ 45.9 million, ₱ 71.09 million, ₱ 93.6 million  respectively).

Thanks to the increase of moviegoers and the addition of 3D, it's now a foregone conclusion that this will be the highest grossing X-Men movie and the next X-Men movie (X-Men: Apocalypse is currently scheduled for a 2017 release date) will be bigger than ever. But for Days of Future Past, ₱ 400 million is likely reachable.

Box Office: King "Godzilla" dominates

Godzilla
Godzilla finally reached our country and it has done strong numbers. Meanwhile, The Amazing Spiderman 2 slides and Oculus debuts decent.

Godzilla opened to a strong ₱ 90.32 million. That's above with last year's summer original movies - World War Z (₱ 88.9 million) and Pacific Rim (₱ 83.02 million). While it will be hit hard by X-Men next week, it could still make past 175 million.

Spiderman 2 slides into second place with ₱ 32.5 million. In three weeks, the Spiderman sequel has already banked ₱ 429 million.

Opening in third place, Oculus grossed a decent ₱ 6.62 million which is nearly identical to the recent 2014's Devil's Due and Paranormal Activity: The Marked Ones though it opened in slightly less theaters. With X-Men taking more screens next week, it will likely fade out.

Comedy movie, The Other Woman came in fourth place with ₱ 6.46 million. In fifth place, So It's You took a regular local movie drop. It was down 65 percent to ₱ 6.37 million and ₱ 30 million is still likely.

Other Grosses:
Amy (2014) - ₱ 1.23 million; New Total - ₱ 1.23 million
Las Vegas - ₱ 0.75 million; New Total - ₱ 2.3 million
Brick Mansions - ₱ 0.67 million; New Total - ₱6.5 million

Box Office: "Spiderman" hangs into top

The Amazing Spiderman 2
Thanks to softer competitions, The Amazing Spiderman 2 continued to dominate the box office while So It's You and The Other Woman did decent business.

The Amazing Spiderman 2 fell 63 percent to ₱ 91.22 million. That's far from the first one's 30 percent drop but, it has already passed it as the second highest grossing Spiderman movie (Spiderman 3 is still the highest grossing Spiderman). With Godzilla coming next week, it is unlikely that can reach more than  500 million.

So It's You
In second place, So It's You opened to ₱ 18.48 million. That's in line with Regal Films' recent movies. The problem is - can it hold in the next weeks? Regal Films announced that the movie grossed  ₱ 6 million on its first day (Wednesday) which means that it didn't hold in the next 4 days. So, above or below ₱ 30 million is likely.

Other Grosses:
The Other Woman ₱ 12.09 million; New Total - ₱ 12.09 million
Brick Mansions - ₱ 5.8 million; New Total - ₱ 5.8 million
Da Possessed - ₱ 4.7 million; New Total - ₱ 122.07 million
Transcendence -  ₱ 0.49 million; New Total - ₱ 24.46 million

Box Office: All falls as "Spidey" leaps into top

The Amazing Spiderman 2
After quiet weeks in the box office, it has finally rise again with The Amazing Spiderman 2 opening into one of the highest openings in the country ever.

Spiderman 2 opened to a strong ₱251 million in its first week. That almost doubled the opening of the first movie (₱138 million). If it follows the same pattern of what the first one did, it could reach ₱600 million.

But, it is unlikely to happen. This could play like last year's Man of Steel which opened to a whooping ₱245 million but fell after that and ended its run with ₱388 million. It was maybe caused by not so good word of mouth and some strong competition.

The movie's reviews worldwide and domestically have been "so-so" and competition this year is tougher (Godzilla, X-Men: Days of Future Past, Maybe this Time, Maleficient opens week after week). But overall, it will still play very well for its distributor.

In second place, Da Possessed earned ₱17.99 million. In three weeks, the horror-comedy movie has now grossed ₱117 million which is Navarro's highest grossing solo movie.

Transcendence crashed on third place. The Johnny Depp Sci-Fi groosed ₱2.71 million which was off 70 percent from last week. It has now grossed ₱23 million.

In fourth place, Diary ng Panget managed to hold with ₱ 2.66 million which was just off  10 percent from last week. In five weeks, it has already earned ₱119 million.

Taking up its 3D screens and young moviegoers, Rio 2 fell 94 percent to a ₱0.66 million gross. Captain America: The Winter Soldier also fell 74 percent to ₱1.26 million.

Other Grosses:
Heaven is for Real - ₱0.63 million; New Total -  ₱23.7 million
The Grand Budapest Hotel - ₱ 0.35 million; New Total - ₱2.98 million
300: Rise of an Empire - ₱0.1 million; New Total - ₱ 148 million

Box Office: "Rio" leads with no "Da Possessed" official gross reports

With no official reports for Da Possessed (Star Cinema announced the movie has grossed 100 million in two weeks), Animated sequel Rio 2 takes the first place.

In its third week, Rio 2 grossed ₱12.16 million. Overall, the movie has now grossed ₱110.6 million. It should atleast gross ₱ 120 million before it ends its run.

In second place, Heaven is for Real earned a strong ₱11.31 million. That's up a whooping 100 percent from last week. In third place, Transcendence earned ₱ 9.2 million which was up 16 percent from last week.

Movies that opened (even not) on Easter Weekend usually sees an increase from their opening and the two movies above are no exception to that.

In two weeks, the faith-based movie has now grossed  ₱20.2 million which is strong while the Johnny Depp's movie has now grossed ₱19.01 million and will be one of the lowest grossing Depp movies in the country (it is also performing poorly in its domestic market).

Captain America: The Winter Soldier continues its strong run. The movie has grossed
₱4.99 million on its fifth weekend. Overall, it has already earned ₱312 million and will probably not reach 320 million with Spiderman taking over its screens.

Diary ng Panget grossed ₱ 2.98 million this weekend and has grossed ₱116 million in four weeks.

Other Grosses:

The Grand Budapest Hotel - ₱ 1.55 million; New Total - ₱ 2.64 million
Son of God - ₱1.29 million; New Total - ₱ 21.97 million
Hunter X Hunter: The Last Mission - ₱ 0.92 million; New Total - ₱ 3.13 million
The Love Punch - ₱ 0.62 million; New Total - ₱ 2.5 million
Divergent - ₱ 0.39 million; New Total - ₱ 73.2 million

Saturday Update: "Da Possessed" dominates, but not too big

Cast of Da Possessed Source: Star Cinema
While it didn't reached my expectations, Da Possessed opened up on top on Black Saturday.

According to Star Cinema, Da Possessed  opened to a strong 17 million. That's almost half of the opening of last year's It Takes a Man and A Woman (₱ 32 million) and in line with 2011's Pak! Pak! My Dr. Kwak! (₱15 million) which both opened on the same day (Black Saturday).

That may be a very good opening but with The Amazing Spiderman 2 coming next week, it should have opened higher because it may lose a big number of cinemas starting on Wednesday. For example: Pak! Pak! My Dr. Kwak! held on its second week but crashed on the third weekend (time when Fast Five opened).

For now, ₱27 million is locked for Da Possessed for its first 2 days though it can reach up to ₱33 million or more if it can hold today (Sunday).

Miyerkules, Abril 16, 2014

Weekly Forecast: Vhong Navarro to "possess" a big audience

Vhong Navarro in Da Possessed

This Black Saturday, Vhong Navarro returns to the big screen with his new movie Da Possessed. Last year, It Takes a Man and a Woman opened on the same week with ₱60 million and ended with a strong ₱375 million. Can Da Possessed follow the same mark?

After one of the biggest happenings in his life, Vhong Navarro is back with his new horror-comedy movie. His last movie Bulong was a hit back in 2011. His daily noontime show It's Showtime continues to draw strong ratings. His popularity continues to rise among young viewers. Also, comedy movies are a sure hit in the country.

The Philippine Cinema has been on the rise on the previous years. For Example: Rio 2 opened 160 percent above Rio (2011). That example alone shows that there has been a rise in the number of moviegoers right now. These may help Da Possessed to open strong.

For its first two days, I predict Da Possessed to open in line with It Takes a Man and a Woman. So, it should atleast gross ₱50 million.

 Prediction:
1. Da Possessed - ₱65 million (2 Days Only)
2. Rio 2 - ₱20 million (2 Days Only)

Box Office: "Rio" flies higher

Rio 2
On the final week before the Holy Week, animated sequel Rio 2 took first place this weekend. Meanwhile, holdovers Captain America: The Winter Soldier and Diary ng Panget do decent holds.

Playing at 201 theaters, Rio 2 opened with 63.96 million. That's 160 percent higher than its original movie Rio (₱24.57 million). The opening is also the highest opening for an animated movie this year beating The Lego Movie (₱23.7 million) and Mr. Peabody and Sherman (₱13.24 million)

With Holy Week starting on Monday (and already the top choice of the moviegoers this week) and with no serious competition (How To Train Your Dragon 2 opens 2 months from now), it is likely that Rio can pass ₱150 million by the end of its run.

Captain America: The Winter Soldier dropped 52 percent with ₱30.1 million. In three weeks, the Marvel movie has grossed a very good ₱288 million.

Diary ng Panget fell 55 percent with ₱27 million. That's a fine drop for a local movie. So far, the book adaptation has grossed ₱102 million. It's unlikely that it can pass 150 million unless it can hold this coming Easter Holiday.

Son of God was up 15 percent with ₱8.12 million. That increase was largely caused by its story (The life of Jesus Christ is perfect for Holy Week) which attracted religious moviegoers (older audience)

Divergent held well this week. It managed to gross ₱6.2 million which was just off 23 percent from last week. In four weeks, it has already banked ₱68.3 million.

Other grosses:
Haunt - ₱3.44 million
Sabotage - ₱1.98 million; New total - ₱ 8.37 million
300: Rise of an Empire - 0.36 million; New total - ₱145.8 million
The Lego Movie - ₱ 0.07 million; New total - ₱50.9 million

Weekly Forecast: Can "Rio" flies above "Captain America" & "Diary ng Panget"?

Rio 2 (Source: IMDB)
After 3 years, the sequel to Rio will finally open this week. But can it beat last week top movies?

The first Rio opened to 24 million and ended its run with 71 million. It was a solid family movie. After three years, the sequel has finally arrived with Amazon as their new setting.

In the country, original animated movies are not that strong. But, most animated sequels rise over the first movie and the last animated movie of the year was Mr. Peabody and Sherman which is now gone in the cinemas. The Pacquiao-Bradley fight on Sunday won't even hurt big the movie. These factors will help Rio 2 to open bigger.

I expect Rio 2 to open between 33-40 million, enough to have a strong battle for number 1 with Captain America and (possilbly) Diary ng Panget. Anything lower than that would be surprising but anything higher than that won't be surprising.

Prediction:
1. Rio 2 - 34 million
2. Captain America: The Winter Soldier - 27 million (-60%)
3. Diary ng Panget - 25 million (-59%)

Note: These are only the projections of the author.

Box Office: "Captain America" holds, "Diary ng Panget" dominates

Captain America: The Winter Soldier (Source: IMDB)

Two movies were in head-to-head this week. But, Captain America: The Winter Soldier manages to win over a new hit Filipino movie Diary ng Panget

The Captain America sequel dropped 58 percent to 65.3 million on its second week. This drop is better than last year's Thor: The Dark World (67 percent) and the first Captain America (65 percent). Overall, The Winter Soldier has now earned PHP 250.54 million which is higher than the total gross of the first movie (PHP 150 million) and is on track for a 330 million total.

We know that this will be a hit among the younger audience, but not this big. Diary ng Panget opened to a strong 61.32 million. That's almost eight times higher than the recent novel adaptation ABNKKBSNPLko? The Movie which earned a poor 8 million.

Diary ng Panget is a series from an online website Wattpad. When it turned out to be a hit, they have released a book series which also dominated the book sales which means Diary ng Panget has already built a fanbase among teenagers. The cast may not be famous, but they have also helped to draw among teenagers.

If it continues to attract teenagers, it can dominate the box office for the next weeks. But, as Holy Week comes next week and Star Cinema's Da Possessed opens the following week, a 150 million total is unlikely. But, it is still a major win for VIVA Films which has been struggling to find a new hit movie in the recent years.

In third place, Y/A Adaptation Divergent earned 8.2 million. While that drop (33 percent)  is far better than The Hunger Games (76 percent), it now trails THG by 70 million. In three weeks, it has now grossed PHP 62.17 million.

Son of God and Sabotage opened in fourth and fifth place with 7.17 million and 5.56 million respectively. Both movies opening are low but still decent.

Other grosses:
300: Rise of an Empire - PHP 607,938; New Total - PHP 148.4 million
Need For Speed - PHP 143,435; New Total - PHP 36.53 million
The Lego Movie - PHP 118,617; New Total - PHP 51.97 million
